Men and Circuit Training

Men and Circuit Training

I’ve found myself in a few conversations lately with some big, strong guys who are sort of feeling stumped when they’re at the gym. They’ve been doing the same exercises for years and years, and don’t really know how they should be switching it up (many just hate to admit it and ask for help – which is of course why I start digging). So, they hobble around from the lat pulldown machine to the leg press, from the bench to the roman chair, and finally when they run out of ideas they leave the gym feeling certainly more depleted than pumped up. What’s missing? A solid circuit structure. Circuit style training is amazing for you men...

Jess’ Favourite Things, Dec 19: BOSU!

Jess’ Favourite Things, Dec 19: BOSU!

Duh! This is my very favourite fitness-related thing. The Bosu is my favourite fitness toy / tool. I use it in so many sessions, because I am a firm (pun intended) believer that stability work, combined with some soft-landing plyometrics, is the fastest way to get a hard body that is endurable from the inside-out. If you have a Bosu, with proper guidance you can do an amazing full-body workout with strictly bodyweight – no dumbbells required. Stability challenges require optimal muscle recruitment, and strengthen those suckers right down to the bone. Read: you will achieve a strong, long-lasting and compact body. Where do you buy it? Again, I recommend Foremost...

Jess’ Favourite Things, Dec 11: Local Organic Delivery

Jess’ Favourite Things, Dec 11: Local Organic Delivery

Mama Earth Organics keeps my Wednesdays pretty exciting! It is when my delivery of all organic, mostly local produce comes to my door. Every Friday I get an email with a list of items I will be receiving the following Wednesday. I then have until Tuesday morning to sign in to the site and customize this list, should I want to swap some things out for other items. Also, they are affiliated with a few local bakeries (including Queen St Gluten Free Bakery where I love to get my bean and millet toast). You can add items such as maple syrup, hummus, eggs, almond milk etc to the order as well. And let me tell you, in the middle of the week, more often than not, I do not...

Jess’ Favourite Things, Dec 9: Fitness Equipment Store

Jess’ Favourite Things, Dec 9: Fitness Equipment Store

When I am referring clients to a store to pick up their new equipment (dumbbells, balls, Bosus, jump rope, treadmills etc) there is only one place I tell them to go: Foremost Fitness on Eglinton. In the world of fitness gadgets, it can be hard to know what is going to be an appropriate investment for you. We all know people who’ve thrown money at a product and the it sits in the basement collecting dust! The store is not a massive warehouse overwhelming with a ton of product – it is streamlined, clean and spacious with the most perfect display of merchandise. The staff is always incredibly friendly and helpful, and most of all, their pricing is reasonable....

Jess’ Favourite Things, Dec 6: Jump Rope!

Jess’ Favourite Things, Dec 6: Jump Rope!

The absolute best do-anywhere, heart-pumping fat-blasting and anatomy-respecting cardio? Jump rope! If you haven’t tried this since you were a kid, it’s time to pick the rope back up and give it a whirl. Be patient with yourself, it can take a few tries to get back in the “swing” of it. Start with 30-50 jumps, work your way up to 100 using it in between your strength circuits. Soon enough, you’ll be able to blast out 5-10 minutes at a time. Then, you can simply take a few breaks and use it as an entire cardio workout. The other reason I love it is the body stays pretty straight, so the hip flexors don’t get the same constant...

Jess’ Favourite Things Dec 3: My Favourite Yoga DVD

Jess’ Favourite Things Dec 3: My Favourite Yoga DVD

Because of my workouts needing to be snuck in around my clients’ appointments, I can rarely make an appointment myself.  So, yoga classes, although they happen once in a blue moon, are primarily out of the question. I LOVE power yoga, so what is the ultimate solution? Rodney Yee’s Power Yoga: Total Body DVD. I’ve had this DVD for years.  Even if I just have 20-30 minutes at the end of an exhausting day, its repetitive vinyasa and hip stretches are exactly what I need to wind down, and to get into bed feeling refreshed and taken care of. I’ve recommended this DVD to many of my clients who have all enjoyed it as much as I have. You can buy it at...
