Fresh Restaurants, New Menu: Green Poutine

Fresh Restaurants, New Menu: Green Poutine

Vegan or avoiding dairy and dying to indulge just like everybody else? Well, on one of those days when you just feel like getting a little bad or consuming something a bit heavier, you can head over to Fresh and grab the Green Poutine. The french fries are just french fries, no healthy twist. So, again, it’s not a HEALTH food, it’s an indulgence suited for an infrequent visit, not your daily lunch. But we all need those indulgences. Slightly more angelic are the steamed greens (chard etc.), roasted mushroom gravy and even the fresh “cheese” sauce which develops its orange colour from carrot and sweet potato. The chef has mastered this...

Fresh Restaurants, New Menu: Phytosalad and Trail Mix Power Shake

THE PHYTOSALAD. This is one of my favourites of the new additions to the menu at Fresh. This salad blew my mind the first time I tried it – what a delicious combo of flavours. First of all, the edible flowers are of course a lovely touch. But combine those microgreens and sprouts with the soba noodles, tofu steaks (I also like it with the marinated tofu cubes) in the tahini-esque 3-6-9 dressing and you end up shovelling this awesome contrast in your mouth like it’s some bad-for-you comfort food. But it’s not. It’s fresh, delicious and green. Add to that base the sweet greens peas, crispy onions, toasted nuts, fresh mint, nappa cabbage and...

Healthy Snacks

I’ve posted about this before, but we all need refreshers! You should never go longer than four hours without some fuel, so when your days are long and meals are widely spread out, you have to make sure you have some balanced in-betweeners to keep your blood sugar levels stable, energy high and body burning as it should. Jess’ Favourite Things, Dec 19: BOSU!

Jess’ Favourite Things, Dec 19: BOSU!

Duh! This is my very favourite fitness-related thing. The Bosu is my favourite fitness toy / tool. I use it in so many sessions, because I am a firm (pun intended) believer that stability work, combined with some soft-landing plyometrics, is the fastest way to get a hard body that is endurable from the inside-out. If you have a Bosu, with proper guidance you can do an amazing full-body workout with strictly bodyweight – no dumbbells required. Stability challenges require optimal muscle recruitment, and strengthen those suckers right down to the bone. Read: you will achieve a strong, long-lasting and compact body. Where do you buy it? Again, I recommend Foremost...

Jess’ Favourite Things, Dec 16: Health Food Store

Jess’ Favourite Things, Dec 16: Health Food Store

Essence of Life is one of my favourite health food stores in the city. It is inexpensive, the staff are helpful, and it has everything I am looking for when it’s time to stock up on groceries, supplements, beauty products… you name it. Yesterday I had the perfect snowy Sunday afternoon simply taking my time perusing through the tight yet super-stocked aisles, putting a basket together of both things on my list, and things that jogged my inspiration while there. Moonbeam coffee in hand. Head over to Kensington market and check out this little gem of a shop. You won’t be disappointed! Plus, it has wonderful health-inspired stocking stuffers....
