Ryan: Intervals and Vegetarian Try-Outs

Ryan: Intervals and Vegetarian Try-Outs

Hello everyone, Another healthy week in the books! I took Jessica’s advice regarding interval training this past weekend. I did 15 rounds of 1 (fast) min : 1 (slow) min and immidiately saw resuts. I covered 6KM for a total of 5 Min/km during the work out. It is amazing how that little timer keeps the focus on pace throughout the workout. I am going to add in more shorter 5-6 KM runs going forward, as per Jessica’s comments about my muscle goals relative to my cardio goals (Jess adds: With too many long runs, Ryan will not put on the muscle that he intends). I think I mention it every week: Diet is my biggest challenge. Jessica concocted a clever little plan,...

Ryan: A New Restaurant, and New Running Goals

Ryan: A New Restaurant, and New Running Goals

Well hello, ya’ll. So this past week was a bit slower on the workout side of things: 2 strength workouts and two 11km runs. But, this week I am back on track. I was slowed down by some blisters from my new work boots. Made running pretty impossible – same with squats, lunges, burpees… basically any of the staples of a J-Man workout. But now that the blisters have subsided I’m back on track. I have been running a lot lately and thought I would share some of my ups and downs with you on that front. I live approximately 11.2KM from my work. My timed runs to and from work have been everywhere from 55-70mins, averaging around 60 minutes. This works out to about a...

Ryan: My Stomach Hates Fast Food Now

Hey ya’ll, Relatively uneventful week/weekend. (Jessica says: Ryan, with you, uneventful tends to be a good thing.) I did however fall victim to a new burger joint opening up near my office. This burger joint has incredible choices, few of them are healthy. I stuffed myself with a burger covered in ranch sauce (ranch sauce, Ryan?!), cheese, onion rings etc. for lunch, and felt sick until I went to bed (like 12 hours later). It is nice to see that my body isn’t as used to handling that garbage as it once was. Back when I was 230lbs I wouldn’t have had any trouble with a meal like that. Work out wise I kept it simple this week: strength work outs, running, and yoga!...

Ryan: Another Lesson Learned

Ryan: Another Lesson Learned

Attack of the injury buggggggggg! Well folks, it’s little ol’ me again. Where did I go? “Didn’t you just jump back on the horse, Ryan?! How did you already fall off again so quickly?” These are reasonable questions. First of all, sorry for my absence from posting. The good news is I am back in full swing and have been for the last week and half. My body and I just love to find new ways to halt progress. When I last wrote I was gearing back up into action, committed to a simple new diet and excited for the challenge in front of me. Too excited. You see, like most people who have a goal and get off on achieving/surpassing it, I decided to hit the...

Top 10 Form Mistakes in Strength Training

Top 10 Form Mistakes in Strength Training

Well, the title is self-explanatory. I plan to address these issues in videos, demo-ing both the incorrect and the correct version of each exercise. It must wait until we are done house-breaking our new little man pictured below – as you can imagine, it is tough to film videos with two dogs running around the house! In the meantime, remember NOT to do the following things for these popular exercises. 1. Lunge: Slanting forward. When the front knee passes the toes, the load hits that joint, rather than when you press the heel in and recruit more of the glute. The legs should always be bent in two 90 degree angles. The torso needs to be straight and not bent...
